El Campello

A long thin fishing coast north east of Alicante, with a working port, a corsair watchtower and one of the most important archaeological sites on the Costa Blanca on a spur beside it.

A port with a deep past

A working shore around the Illeta

El Campello was the fishing and market outlet for the inland huerta villages and became a municipality in its own right only in 1901. Its fleet still lands its catch at the port and sells it at the afternoon auction.

On the promontory beside the port, the Illeta dels Banyets holds a Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman sequence, including Roman fish-farming tanks. The sixteenth-century Torre de la Illeta stands guard over it.
